How Epcot is Becoming the 'Festival Park' at Walt Disney World

Epcot will officially become as the “Festival Park” at Walt Disney World. Here’s why.

Disney World recently shared plans about the transformation of EPCOT. While a timeline hasn’t been provided, we now know that Disney is officially making EPCOT its “festival park” by creating new spaces for these events to take place.

Construction Plans Revealed for Epcot at Walt Disney World

The EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival has really grown in popularity and now runs from July 14 through November 19, 2022. Remember when it used to run for just a few weeks? I wouldn’t mind if it ran all year!

Festival of Arts, EPCOT’s winter event has become one of my personal favorites with so many interactive displays and events like the giant Paint by Numbers wall.

And of course the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival with the amazing Disney topiaries and of course the concerts.

As festivals continue to become more of an integral part of the EPCOT experience, Disney Imagineers are creating new spaces that will bring these events into the heart of the park in the new World Celebration neighborhood.

In several new artist concept renderings recently released, you can see how the transformation of EPCOT will take shape as you walk past Spaceship Earth and begin your journey through the park.

World Celebration will offer a beautiful hub divided into several different gardens, with a central planter based on the five-ring EPCOT logo. Filled with ample seating and shade.

Each of these gardens will have their own identities, and they’ll change along with the festivals throughout the year.

At night, the gardens will take on a whole new life, as you can see here.

They’re designed to be enjoyed in the round, where lighting immerses you in the nighttime experience that will evolve through the seasons.

This all surrounds CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza, a multi-use facility and outdoor event space, respectively, that bring the park’s international festivals to the center of EPCOT.

CommuniCore Plaza will have the flexibility to host intimate musical performances that extend out into the nearby gardens, as you can see in the rendering above, as well as large-scale concerts.

This new facility, which you can see in the upper-right side of this rendering, is inspired by the original EPCOT aesthetic apparent throughout the park’s transformation, including the timeless triangular geometry most prominently featured in Spaceship Earth.

Even the CommuniCore name reaches back to the origins of EPCOT while also emphasizing the park’s central idea of community.

If you have been to EPCOT recently or if you have passed by on the monorail and got a look over the construction walls, you know that work is far from complete and they seem to be working at a snail’s pace.

While no opening date has been provided, my guess is that we are at least a year out from completion, unless this new area is opened in phases.

Star Wars fans can enjoy a new limited time experience at Walt Disney World: Meta Quest 2 Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.

Star Wars fans can enjoy a new limited time experience at Walt Disney World: Meta Quest 2 Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge. This new venue is located at Disney Springs West Side in the former NBA Experience building.

This limited time venue runs from May 2 through July 21, 2022. There is no cost to play but reservations are highly recommended.

You can make an appointment for Meta Quest 2 upon arriving at Disney Springs by scanning a QR code.

Meta Quest Virtual Reality Experience featuring Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is located in Disney Springs West Side, near House of Blues.

There is no cost and admission is first come, first served. Children must be age 13 or older to participate.

Appointments were still available when we arrived at 5 pm. We booked 8:30 pm which was the first available appointment we could select.

Standby is available during the day. By 6 pm, they had stopped taking standby guests for the evening.

Only those with appointments were able to go in.

You can make an appointment to go inside by scanning a QR code at the entrance. You should do this as soon as you arrive at Disney Springs.

You’ll be asked for the number of people who want to try it out. If you have 2 people that want do it, be sure you make an appointment for 2. Do not include people who just want to observe.

You’ll need to fill out a waiver before you can begin. It takes only a minute to complete.

There’s a few minutes of set up and a brief tutorial on how it works. You are free to stop at any time.

The mission takes about 15 minutes to complete. You can trade off with other people in your party if others want to try it out.

In my son’s mission, we had to go on an galactic adventure through a forest in search of a crate of ingredients. There’s more to the quest, but no spoilers here, sorry!

Tickets range from $109-$199 plus tax depending on the night selected. Halloween night usually sells out quickly.

Walt Disney World Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members may purchase specially priced ticket for select dates.

These dated event tickets do not require an additional day theme park ticket or Disney Park Pass theme park reservation.

Disney World's 3rd Generation Magic Bands, Hey Disney! and Dining Plans Delayed

What happened to Hay Disney, the Disney Dining Plans, and 3rd Generation Magic Bands?

There are many great experiences returning to Walt Disney World Resort like being able to hug the characters again, daytime parades, and entertainment but there are still a number of projects that were promised in “early 2022” that we don’t talk about anymore.

At the Destination D23 event in November, Josh D'Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products shared some new things we could look forward to in 2022 during a high-energy presentation, complete with characters and Cast Members joining him on stage. To anyone who was in the room, it was incredibly inspiring.

While more experiences and opportunities are coming back very soon (I’m looking at you Minnie Vans) I can’t help but notice that some “early 2022” items seem to have fallen off the radar.

We are halfway through April so I think it’s fair to say it’s not “early 2021” anymore.

Hey Disney!

In November 2021, we learned that Hey Disney! is going to be a unique version of Amazon Echo.

Also Hey Disney! devices were to be installed in 30,000 hotel rooms across Walt Disney World in early 2022 plus they could be purchased for home use.

Hey Disney! would be able to handle requests, such as asking for more towels or requesting Bell Services.

Hey Disney! would answer questions about your Disney World hotel, give you Disney transportation tips and wait times, provide park hours, tell you what time the fireworks would be at Magic Kingdom and more.

I was supposed to receive a complimentary home version of Hey Disney! but it never arrived. Recently I sent an email to Disney asking when it might be sent out. The Cast Member explained that the project is delayed but will be available sometime in 2022.

The Return of the Disney Dining Plans

Last August, Disney World sent an email to travel agents stating that the Disney Dining Plans would be returning “soon.” I don’t know how Disney defines “soon” but I assume 8+ months could be considered soon by some comparisons.

I believe Disney wants to offer this product again but there are a still a number of operational concerns that need to be addressed.

Not all the restaurants at Disney World have reopened and most are still not operating at full capacity due to staffing issues. This is why it has been somewhat difficult to secure dining reservations.

At Epcot alone, we’re still waiting for Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Norway, Takumi-Tei Restaurant in Japan, Monsieur Paul in France, and Restaurant Marrakesh in Morocco to reopen. Hopefully as the Cultural Representatives begin to arrive this summer, these restaurants will reopen…um…soon!

Staff shortages are still a major factor but I’m not so sure Disney is in a hurry to hire more people right now.

Currently the demand for leisure travel is very high. But if the economy makes a downward trend, Disney World could easily be over staffed in 2023.

There are a few more issues that need to be addressed before the Disney Dining Plans can be brought back. But let’s hope they come back “soon.”

3rd Generation Magic Bands

On September 30, 2021 we learned that 3rd generation Magic Band would be arriving at Walt Disney World in early 2022. If you have been paying attention to this article, you know how that went!

Last fall I began advising my clients who booked 2022 travel to hold off on purchasing Magic Bands in anticipation of the 3rd generation bands being released.

Generation 3 Magic Bands are pretty cool, I had a chance to see a test band in action. They come alive at various times as you move about the parks and resorts with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations and gesture recognition.

These wristbands will allow you to engage in new interactive experiences resort-wide. There is no official word on when they will be introduced at Walt Disney World. I just know they’re running late.

Utopia of the Seas - The World's largest Cruise Ship Coming in 2024

Utopia of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world.

Royal Caribbean announced that work has officially started on the next Oasis Class cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas. While we don’t know much about it just yet, Royal Caribbean shared that it will be the largest cruise ship in the world and the first Oasis Class cruise ship to be powered by liquified natural gas.

I’m a big fan of the Oasis Class cruise ships, having just sailed on Symphony of the Seas, I can tell you there’s no experience like it. You can see photos from my adventure on my social media channels:

Soon you can hug the Disney characters again in Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney Cruise Line

Everyday someone sends an email asking me when they can hug Disney characters again.The wait is almost over! Character greetings are returning to Walt Disney World, Disneyland and Disney Cruise Line as early as April 18, 2022.

The official announcement was released today from the Walt Disney Company:

“As early as April 18, we will start reintroducing traditional character greetings at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line and at Aulani Resort in Hawaii. Very soon, Guests will once again be able to hug Mickey Mouse, get an autograph from Mulan, and share a laugh with Goofy. We know many of you have missed these special moments, and your Disney character friends have missed you, too!

During the past two years, we’ve taken a very gradual, intentional approach to health and safety protocols. Recent trends and guidance have provided opportunities for us to bring back some of our most beloved magic, like character greetings and dining experiences. While not all locations will be available immediately, we anticipate reopening in phases throughout the spring and early summer.”

CDC No Longer Warning Travelers About Cruise Travel

CDC no longer warning travelers about risk of contracting COVID on cruise ships after 2 years

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dropped its risk assessment of cruise travel yesterday after more than two years of warning travelers against the dangers of contracting COVID-19 on a cruise.

"CDC is removing the COVID-19 Cruise Ship Travel Health Notice," said spokesperson Dave Daigle.

Travelers can now make their own risk assessment when choosing to travel on a cruise ship, much like they do in all other travel settings.

Photo Tour: The Largest Cruise Ship in the World - Symphony of the Seas

Highlights from my recently voyage on the largest cruise ship in the world, Symphony of the Seas

It carries nearly 9,000 passengers, has 25 pools, 18 decks, 12 specialty restaurants, 7 distinct neighborhoods and it weighs 228,000 tons.

Symphony of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ship, is the largest cruise ship in the world, well it was until Wonder of the Seas came in January of 2022, but they are close in size.

I’ve always wanted to travel on a Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ship, there are 5 in all.

This particular cruise departed Miami, Florida for a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary with stops at Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Cozumel, Mexico and Perfect Day at Coco Cay, Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean moves its fleet of ships all over the world, but lately several of them have been sailing from Florida.

Harmony of the Seas, a sister to Symphony, is currently based in Port Canaveral (Orlando), so you can easily combine an Oasis Class voyage with a trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando.

Here are a few my favorite parts of this ship:

Symphony of the Seas in Costa Maya, Mexico

At 216 feet wide, Symphony of the Seas is twice as wide as the Disney Wonder (and most other cruise ships).

Oceanview Balcony Stateroom

On this voyage we had a Oceanview Balcony stateroom. There are 2,759 standard staterooms and 188 suites. You can also book an interior balcony stateroom overlooking Central Park or the Boardwalk.

Oceanview rooms balconies with little more privacy, but I think it would be fun have a room overlooking the interior of the ship. How often do you have a balcony facing the inside of a ship??

Our stateroom was set up to sleep 3 guests. The sofa converts into a twin size day bed. The stateroom attendant sets it up during turndown service each evening.

Bathrooms are generally tiny on cruise ships, this was no different. There’s no tub, but the standup shower is more spacious than it looks.

Our stateroom was extremely quiet, we didn’t hear a thing on the other side of the wall or even outside in the hallway.

This is the theater in the rear (aft) of the ship where the show, Hiro is performed. Think Cirque du Soleil show on a ship. Breathtaking acrobat performances, high dives, dancers, and high-energy music. Tickets are required to see show but there is no cost - it’s included with your cruise.

We spent a lot of time on Deck 5 . It’s where you’ll find retail shops, a cafe, pizza restaurant (both are included free of charge), several bars and a full service Starbucks Coffee.

Deck 16 has a lot of recreation including several basketball courts, a miniature golf course, pools, zip line and The Ultimate Abyss slide, just to name a few.

This is the start of The Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story slide down to Deck 6. This is a regular slide, not a water slide. It’s not a intimidating as it may seem, it’s actually a lot of fun for the whole family. And it’s all inside a tube so you don’t really know how high up you are. Oh and there are a few small surprises on the way down. The kids are going to love it. You’ll have to take an elevator to ride it again.

Overlooking the Central Park neighborhood at night. Here you’ll find upscale dining and a cafe that serves sandwiches, coffee and dessert (most of the items are included at no charge). When you’re in Central Park, you completely forget that you’re on a cruise ship.

Deck 5 shopping, retail and dining.

Sorrentos Pizza serves up surprisingly good thin-crust pizza. You can have as much as you like, it’s all included in your cruise. Every time we walked by, I had to stop for a slice.

The Boardwalk neighborhood, home to the theater, Playmakers Sports Bar, a carousel, hotdog stand, and an arcade.

We purchased a spa pass to use the steam room and sauna. There are multiple spa packages available for purchase. Use of the fitness center and fitness classes are free.

I did a stretching class with my wife and couldn’t move the rest of the day. The spa is so large and offers so many services, that it spans two decks.

Symphony of the seas Casino

I’m a Disney guy at heart but Las Vegas is my second favorite place to visit. So I had to check out the casino. Here you’ll find table games and slots. Smoking and non-smoking sections are available.

Most table games had $10 minimums, not bad! Penny slots and video poker were also available. The casino is only opened while at sea at while docked at Perfect Day. Look at that, I’m even wearing my Las Vegas t-shirt - I’m ready!

Disney Closes Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Reservation Line Indefinitely. What We Know So Far:

Disney World experiences some growing pains with Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser opening.

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel at Walt Disney World — Disney has closed phone lines for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser , 7-days and counting with no further updates.

The official opening date for Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser was March 1st, however it appears Disney is experiencing some growing pains.

Disney unexpectedly closed the phone lines to Galactic Starcruiser, 1 week ago today, and has not provided a reopening date.

If you have requested a quote from me, or if you have an existing reservation, please know Disney is not allowing us to us to book new reservations or to service existing reservations during this time.

What We Know So Far:

The booking system and phone lines for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser remain closed. The phone lines went down on February 27, 2022 for an unspecified reason.

The availability calendar frequently disappears from Walt Disney World website. When it does appear, you’ll get a message asking you to call to confirm availability or to contact your travel advisor. (but please know that I cannot call. The phone number that I use is also closed).

During this time, guests are not able to make modifications or cancel existing reservations.

If you have a past due payment, your reservation will not automatically cancel, according to a conversation I had with Guest Services at Walt Disney World.

A Disney World Must-Do - Wild Africa Trek at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park!

Wild Africa Trek is one of the best tours available at Walt Disney World. Here are some of the highlights from my recent expedition at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Wild Africa Trek is back at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and my son and I were among the first to head out on the trail.

This is one of the most popular guided tours offered at Walt Disney World Resort because it allows you to get up close to the animals.

Wild Africa Trek is a three hour adventure that takes you on foot and by truck through hidden trails, suspension bridges, and scenic overlooks.

You’ll also make a stop for lunch right in the middle of the savanna and enjoy breathtaking views of the animals.

We had an amazing time on this tour, it was worth every penny and although the animals were spectacular, it was our guides that really made this tour special.

They were truly excited to take us out on the savanna. It’s obvious that they really love the animals and and doing these tours.

After checking in at the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris, we met our guides and the other members of group. There were about 10 of us in all.

Our guides reviewed some rules and assisted with the gear we needed for our trek.

We were given safari vests, a ear piece so we could hear our guides, and a water bottle.

We were allowed to bring our phones for photos, but everything else had to be stored in lockers.

After a safety briefing, we were off right away, starting with the Gorilla Falls Expedition Trail.

There’s a secret entrance on the trail that leads you to the savanna. You would never spot it in a million years!

We soon made our way into the woods heading towards the savanna, stopping to see some of the animals from unique viewing locations.

My favorite animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom are the meerkats, they are so funny - cute too! They were surprised to see us appear from a backstage area.

We were joined by some of the hippo caretakers who shared some fun facts with us. They brought some lettuce and watermelon with them so we could watch them enjoy a snack.

Hippos eat a whole watermelon with the same effort as a person eating a cookie. It’s remarkable to see.

To get up close and personal, our guides locked us in to a tether strap that allowed us to walk right the edge (without falling in).

It’s pretty cool to see part of Kilimanjaro Safaris from a different angle. This is the noisy bridge the safari vehicles go over.

Back on the trail again. As were walking, our guides are talking to us through our headphones. They definitely keep you engaged throughout the entire tour.

We arrived at this tower, the starting point of the suspension bridge. After a quick safety spiel and a check of our gear, we started to climb up.

This was, to me, the highlight of Wild Africa Trek! An “Indiana Jones” style bridge that has seen better days. Yes, it bounces and sways as you go over.

Our guides locked us in with a harness so there was no chance we could fall.

This is the first of 2 bridges. First you’ll pass over more hippos. The second bridge takes you over the crocodile habitat.

You have to be ok with heights here and you should be reasonably steady on your feet. The bridge bounces and sways as you walk across it. 2-3 people are allowed to cross at one time.

You can go at your own pace and stop as often as you like for photos.

After making it to the other side of the bridges, we had an opportunity to get up close to the crocs.

We were once again wearing a tether so we didn’t accidentally fall in and become a snack.

Continuing on the trail, this time we were headed to a special safari vehicle.

We drove onto the savanna following the same road as the regular safari, but we pulled over a lot take in the views, and the animals.

Our guides were answering our questions along the way.

We stopped for lunch in right on the savanna.

Lunch comes in metal tiffins, it’s like a compartmentalized lunch box.

Inside we found chicken curry salad, sun-dried tomato hummus and mini pita, marinated tandoori shrimp, smoked salmon roulade with dill, air-dried beef and prosciutto, and fresh fruit marinated in mint and ginger.

My son and I are not foodies, so it was a little adventurous for us. But we actually enjoyed it!

I’m told it was an authentic safari lunch.

While our guides were preparing lunch we were able to photograph the animals and take photos.

When you ride Kilimanjaro Safaris, you don’t get to spend a lot of time on the savanna, it’s more of a summary of the savanna..

But when you’re here for a while, you can really appreciate just how magnificent the animals are. I didn’t know they wander all over and that they are actually very playful.

That’s not something you can really observe while on the safari ride. The animals tend to do stand still for 5-10 minutes at a time, followed by bursts jumping around and chasing each other.

If you really want to observe their playful side, WIld Africa Trek is the best place to see that.

I was really surprised to see how many animals wander all over the savanna. Whenever I was on the ride, I just assumed the animals had their little zone and pretty much stayed in one place. Not true!

Many of them migrate by nature, so they need to be able to roam the savanna.

We has a such a great adventure on Wild Africa Trek. Everyone made it back, no one was eaten by the crocs.

This was definitely one of the best tours we’ve ever been on at Disney World.

Our guides pointed out a hidden reference to Joe Rhode. He was the principal designer of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and a brilliant Imagineer. Joe retired recently and was given a little credit here for his work on Animal Kingdom park.

Wild Africa Trek requires reservations.

The cost of the tour ranges from $185 - $250 per person, depending on the time and date you choose.

There are usually 2 -3 tours offered daily. To book a tour, contact your travel agent or visit the Disney World website (disneyworld.com).

Separate Valid Admission and Park Reservation for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park is required.

Guests must be at least 8 years of age to attend this experience.

Due to height restrictions for specific areas during the tour, participants must meet the minimum height requirement of 48 inches (122 cm) or may not participate.

Due to weight restrictions for specific areas during the tour, participants must weigh between 45 and 300 lbs (20.14-136 kg) or may not participate.

Excursion occurs rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather or lightning.

Disney Cruise Line: Disney Dream Sold Out for Summer, Fall 2022

If you have been trying to book a summer 2022 vacation you know how difficult it has been trying to find availability at popular destinations like Disney Cruise Line, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.

Now the Disney Wish will begin sailing out of Port Canaveral in mid-July 2022. More details will be announced on February 8, 2022.

This complicated an already busy cruise season as guests on the Disney Wish were given priority to rebook or to receive a Future Cruise Credit.

The future of the Disney Dream is also uncertain. It was scheduled to begin sailing out of the Miami area once the Disney Wish arrived.

Now is the best time to book a summer cruise in order to get the best prices. If you’re a seasoned cruiser you already know this.

Fortunately Royal Caribbean Cruise Line still has availability out of Port Canaveral, Florida. RCCL also offers family-centered cruise vacations, similar to Disney Cruise Line, often for a lot less.

While I’m sure there is a lot of disappointment around this, I’d rather that Disney get it right rather than rush it. I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

But right now is the best time to book your Royal Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas.
