What's the Difference Between Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean?
Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean
Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean dominate the market for family-friendly cruise vacations and they both deliver a premium family vacation experience unlike any of the other cruise lines out there.
They both have private islands in the Bahamas. Most Bhamaian and Caribbean cruises include a stop at their respective island. Disney’s Castaway Cay is more tranquil and natural while Royal’s is more of a destination with restaurants, pools, water slides and of course, beaches.
People often ask me, which cruise line is better, Disney or Royal Caribbean? But it’s not about who is better, that’s too subjective. It’s about booking the vacation experience that appeals to you most.
Let me explain. There are basically 3 categories of cruises:
The inexpensive party cruises - popular with college kids.
Destination-rich cruises - popular with those enjoying their golden years.
Family-focused cruising - ships packed with exciting onboard activities.
Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are obviously family-focused.
But they also attract a number of active adults who want to be somewhere between college kids having a blast and a boatload of retirees who enjoy quietly reading at the pool.
Disney Wish | Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line is perfect for those with children ages 4 to 10.
But I would argue that Disney cruises are also ideal for Disney fans of all ages. Onboard experiences are centered around meeting Disney characters and Disney-themed shows.
Spaces onboard Disney cruise ships are highly themed environments, just like the theme parks. For example, on the Disney Wish, you’ll dine in the royal banquet hall of Arendelle from Disney’s Frozen film, or enjoy a drink in a Star Wars lounge that’s truly out-of-this-world (pun intended).
Star Wars HyperSpace Lounge onboard the Disney Wish
The newer Disney ships have water coasters that circle the top deck along with pools and Disney movies that play all day on a giant movie screen called Funnel Vision.
AquaDuck water coaster onboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. The Disney Wish has a similar attraction.
Disney Cruise Line offers a very high level of service and attention to detail, even when going though the booking process.
One of the best features about DCL is that many standard staterooms can accommodate 4 to 5 guests. This is not the case with most other cruise lines. But Royal Caribbean offers plenty of connecting stateroom options for families.
While Disney Cruise Line is on the higher end of cruise fares, I think you will feel that you definitely feel that you got what you paid for.
If you have tweens or teens that are indifferent to Disney, Star Wars or Marvel, then I recommend Royal Caribbean.
Royal Caribbean
Wonder of the Seas, an Oasis Class Ship, is the largest cruise ship in the world | Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line in the world and offers ships that are designed specifically with family vacations in mind.
Royal specializes in variety. Ships are expertly designed to offer something for the entire family.
This is especially true on the Oasis Class ships, the largest cruise ships in the world.
Some Royal Caribbean ships offer things like zip lines across the top deck, pools, rock climbing walls, water slides, ice skating (on real ice - in a real rink!), laser-tag courses, escape room challenges, bumper cars, specialty restaurants like a hibachi steakhouse, wellness spas, lounges, and casinos.
Many Royal Caribbean ships offer onboard ice skating and ice skating performances
There are so many reasons to get excited about a Royal Caribbean cruise.
Royal Caribbean’s ships are loaded from bow to stern with game-changing thrills but also offer theater shows, live entertainment, as well as next-level dining, and a high level of service. See Royal Caribbean my tips ▸
“Thank you so much for being so patient with us. We had a great first cruise. Your advice was spot on especially with the dining package. ”
Both Disney and Royal Caribbean offer a premium vacation experience with first-class activities and service.
They both dominate the Florida cruise market, departing from Port Canaveral (Orlando) and Miami but they each offer international itineraries too.
For example, Disney and Royal Caribbean sail to Alaska, the Mediterranean, Asia, and Mexico.

Disney Cruise Line will sail from Singapore starting in 2025
Disney Cruise Line and Singapore Tourism Board today announced magical cruise vacations to Southeast Asia for the first time, revealed by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro and Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, S. Iswaran.
Disney Cruise Line will have year-round sailings from Singapore starting in 2025
Under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, Disney Cruise Line and Singapore Tourism Board agreed to collaborate to homeport a brand-new Disney cruise ship exclusively in Singapore for at least five years beginning in 2025. More details about the maiden voyage, itineraries and onboard experiences will be announced at a later date.
“This is a very exciting year for The Walt Disney Company — 2023 marks our 100th anniversary,” D’Amaro said. “As part of this, Disney Cruise Line is currently undergoing an ambitious expansion with new ships and new destinations around the world. We are incredibly excited to make Singapore the home port to our seventh-launched ship, which will sail from here year-round starting in 2025.”
The new ship will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart. Guests of all ages will find dedicated spaces and activities designed just for them, and families will create unforgettable memories with beloved characters such as Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse, Disney Princesses, Marvel Super Heroes and more.

Easy Guide to the Walt Disney World Monorail System
Where the Disney monorails go, frequently asked questions to riding the Disney World monorails, and even a few fun facts.
Walt Disney World monorails carry 50 million passengers a year, service 3 Walt Disney World hotels, two Disney theme parks and operate on 15 miles of track.
Oh and it’s the busiest monorail system in the world! Disney World monorails are also convenient, fast and fun to ride!
Here are a few tips and frequently asked questions about using the Walt Disney World monorails.
Monorails pass right through the lobby of Disney’s Contemporary Resort
Where do the Disney World monorails go?
The monorails begin their routes at a central terminal known as the Ticket and Transportation Center. You can get to all destinations from this station. This is also where the Magic Kingdom parking lot is located.
There are three Disney monorail lines.
Resort Monorail with service to Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.
Express Monorail offers direct service between the Ticket and Transportation Center and Magic Kingdom Park (does not stop at hotels).
Epcot Monorail offers direct service between the Ticket and Transportation Center and Epcot.
Which Disney World hotels are on the monorail?
There are three Deluxe Resorts that offer monorail service to Magic Kingdom and Epcot:
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
Disney’s Contemporary Resort
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
Monorail Red passing through Epcot
How do I get from Magic Kingdom to Epcot by monorail?
Take the Express Monorail to the Ticket and Transportation Center. Here you’ll transfer to the Epcot line. There are signs directing you where to go at each station. Cast Members are also available to assist.
What are the Disney World monorail hours of operation?
The Walt Disney World Monorail System operating times vary, depending on expected crowd levels and park hours. Typically monorails will start running 30 minutes prior to the earliest park opening until one hour after the latest park closing. I would not rely on the monorails to make an early morning dining reservation, consider driving or using Uber or Lyft.
Can I bring a stroller/wheelchair/scooter on the Disney World monorails?
Yes, and in most cases, strollers do not need to be folded. This is very convenient if your little one is sleeping in the stroller! A Cast Member will assist you in boarding the monorail if you have a medical stroller, wheelchair, or scooter.
Monorail Silver on the Epcot line
Is it free to ride the monorail?
There is no charge nor is a ticket required to ride the Walt Disney World monorails.
How often do the monorails arrive at the resort stations?
Monorails arrive every 5-8 minutes.
How long does it take to get to the Magic Kingdom by monorail?
Disney’s Contemporary Resort - about 20 minutes. Even though Disney’s Contemporary Resort is the closest hotel to Magic Kingdom, the monorail has to make a full run from this point. Consider walking to the Magic Kingdom, it takes less than 10 minutes. On your way back to the hotel, take the monorail, you’ll be the first stop.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort - about 10 minutes.
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort - about 3 minutes. When leaving Magic Kingdom, consider walking back instead, it could be faster. If you board the monorail at Magic Kingdom, the Grand Floridian will be the last stop.
Which is the most convenient hotel at Walt Disney world?
Disney’s Polynesian Resort is the most convenient because you have easy access to both Magic Kingdom and Epcot by monorail. To board from Epcot monorail from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, simply walk to the nearby Ticket and Transportation Center station. Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian are also convenient to Magic Kingdom and Epcot, but you’ll need to take the monorail to the Ticket and Transportation Center and transfer.
I’m worried about getting lost. will there be anyone to help me?
Yes, Cast Members are present at each station. Keep in mind this is not the New York City Subway System by any means. If at any time you feel lost or unsure of the route, there are Disney employees at each station who are happy to assist you. Disney does a great job with directional signage at each station. These are not commuter lines, the Walt Disney World Monorail System was built for visitors.
If you have a specific question about using the Walt Disney World monorail, feel free to contact me.

Royal Caribbean Dining and Beverage Package Tip
Tip for saving money on dining and beverage packages with Royal Caribbean
As a travel advisor specializing in Royal Caribbean, I spend a lot of time providing expert advice for my cruise clients. Here’s one that comes up a lot: is it worth it to buy a dining or beverage package onboard the ship?
Royal Caribbean Beverage Package Tip
Royal Caribbean offers several packages, spa packages, dining packages, beverage packages, wifi packages, and more.
Now, whether or not they are worth it for your family is a different topic and I can work with you to help you figure that out. But in general, most people buy at least some type of onboard package.
I always get the soft-drink package because soda isn’t free onboard, not even at dinner and I don’t like alcohol. So for me, the price is reasonable enough. But here’s how you can save money on these plans.
One of my favorite tips regarding onboard purchases is to wait on the beverage packages until after you book.
See, after you book your cruise (you remembered to book with a travel agent, right?) you will very likely receive an email from Royal Caribbean with onboard discounts that are available during your cruise.
Royal Caribbean Beverage Package Tip
Royal Caribbean usually sends this discount email only once, so if and when you receive it, be sure to act on it when it comes in.
If you already booked a beverage package, you can ask your travel agent to modify your package to the new lower rate for you.
“Thank you so much for being so patient with us. We had a great first cruise. Your advice was spot on especially with the dining package. ”

Adventure Ocean is the kid’s club on Royal Caribbean ships
Did you know every member of the Adventure Ocean and Teen Program team holds a four-year degree in education, recreation or similar major?
And each team member also has a minimum of three years of work history in a related field.
Experience counts when it comes to caring for kids!
The Royal Babies program (ages 6-18 months) offers the tiniest guests, and their parents, interactive classes filled with enriching activities developed by early childhood experts.
And for toddlers, Royal Tots (ages 18-36 months) offers interactive playground sessions filled with age-appropriate activities and toys.
The uniquely creative, educational and fun programs available for kids 3-11 years old include a combination of art, history, culture and of course, crayons.
And exploration comes to life with the messy, hands-on scientific fun of Adventure Science. One thing's for sure: kids will never be bored onboard.
“Thank you so much for being so patient with us. We had a great first cruise. Your advice was spot on especially with the dining package. ”
Whether hanging out with other cruisers or checking out the scene, games, sports and parties are on the agenda.
Exclusive tween- and teen-only spots from outdoor hangouts to clubs and arcades will quickly become their favorite place onboard.
The Teen Program also allows older kids the freedom to come and go as they please.
They'll love it so much, the only problem parents will have is getting them to leave!

Disney Visa Cardmembers receive reward dollars on all card purchases and there’s no limit to the number of Reward Dollars you can earn. There are 2 types of programs offered by Disney Visa:
Disney Visa earns (no annual fee)
1% on all purchases
Disney Premiere Visa earns ($49 annual fee)
5% on card purchases used on Hulu, DisneyPlus, and ESPN streaming services
2% on card purchases at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and most Disney locations
1% on all other card purchases.
Use your Disney Visa or Disney Premiere Visa to purchase a Disney vacation package you’ll receive a promotional APR of 0% for 6 months on the following:
Disney World vacation packages
Disney cruises
Adventures by Disney packages
Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, vacation packages
What Disney Visa Rewards actually look like
Both the Disney Visa and Disney Premier Visa offer some useful benefits for Disney fans.
The no-fee card is on par with others - 1 percent in cash back or rewards. But before you dish out $49 for the Disney Visa Premier annual fee, you might consider other cards without an annual fee.
For example, the Citi Double Cash Card offers 2% cash back on all purchases and there's no annual fee.
TIP: Try not to carry a balance with the Disney Premier Visa- the interest charges will eat up your profits.
Use sites like Credit.com to shop multiple credit cards at once - there are plenty of cards offering cash back and rewards for no annual fee.
Earning Disney Visa Reward Dollars
Disney Visa is average when compared to other credit card reward programs. But let’s break it down to what you would actually have to spend to earn some Disney Visa reward dollars:
To earn 500 Disney Reward Dollars that can be applied to a Walt Disney World vacation, you’d need to spend $25,000 if earning 2% (gas restaurants and groceries), or $50,000 if earning 1%.
To cover the Disney Premier Card annual fee you will need to spend an additional $2,450 each year on 2% eligible rewards or $4,900 on 1% eligible rewards. So those 500 Disney Reward Dollars actually cost $27,450 at 2% or $54,900 at 1%.
If you spend $3,000 on a Walt Disney World vacation, which will earn 2% in rewards on the Disney Premier Visa, you'll get 60 Disney Reward Dollars.
Reward Dollars can also applied toward airline travel as a statement credit. You can purchase any flight on any airline and apply Reward Dollars towards that purchase. Redemptions start at 50 Disney Rewards Dollars for a $50 airline statement credit toward tickets on any airline to any destination
Both the Disney Visa and Disney Premier Visa offer some useful benefits for Disney fans.
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge | Walt Disney World
The card is on par with others - many offer 1 or 2 percent in cash back or rewards. But before you dish out $49 for the annual fee, you might consider other cards without an annual fee.
For example, the Citi Double Cash Card offers 2% cash back on all purchases and there's no annual fee.
The idea is to get as much as you can for things you are going to buy anyway without an annual fee.
Try not to carry a balance - the interest charges will eat up your profits. Use sites like Credit.com to shop multiple credit cards at once - there are plenty of cards offering cash back and rewards for no annual fee.

Is Disney Premier Visa worth the annual fee?
With the Disney Premier Visa you can earn 2% in Disney Reward Dollars on purchases at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants.
It earns 1% in Disney Reward Dollars on everything else. The Disney Premier Visa has an annual fee $49.
Break Even on the Annual Fee
Is the Disney Premier Visa Worth the annual fee?
If earning double rewards, you’ll need to spend $2,450 to break even on the annual fee, or $4,900 if earning 1% in rewards.
The Retailer Name Game
Sure it's nice to get 2% in rewards on gas and groceries but not all retailers are registered with Visa as an actual gas station or grocery store.
For example, Walmart Supercenter and SuperTarget might not be considered grocery stores according to Disney Visa, they are general merchandise stores and grocery purchases will earn 1%. It depends how each individual store is registered with Disney Visa.

Easy Guide to Disney Skyliner
Route map, operating times, strollers and wheelchairs and frequently asked questions about using Disney Skyliner
Disney Skyliner opened on Sept. 29, 2019 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Here you’ll find information on Disney Skyliner times, hours of operation, and the route map.
Disney Skyliner
Disney Skyliner Map
Disney Skyliner conveniently transports guests between Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four resort hotels:
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort (hub)
Disney’s Pop Century Resort
Disney’s Riviera Resort
The hub for Skyliner is located at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. All routes lead to Caribbean Beach. At the hub, you can transfer to other Skyliner routes.
What are Disney Skyliner hours of operation?
Disney Skyliner hours vary. On a typical day gondolas begin flying approximately 1-hour prior to park opening and up to two hours after park closing. Disney does not post Skyliner hours on its website. Instead, there are signs at each Skyliner station that display operating hours. You can also ask at your hotel for daily Skyliner hours of operation.
What are the Disney Skyliner times along each route?
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Disney’s Hollywood Studios: 5 minutes
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to Epcot: 15 minutes
Disney’s Pop Century / Disney’s Art of Animation to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort: 5 min
Disney’s Riviera Resort to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort: 5 minutes
Disney’s Riviera Resort to Epcot: 10 minutes
Epcot to Disney’s Hollywood Studios: 20 minutes
I have an early morning dining reservation, can I use Disney Skyliner to get there?
This is a tricky one. Disney doesn’t post Skyliner hours online and there are no set hours of operation. Ask at your hotel to be sure. You might have to plan on driving or taking Uber or Lyft.
Are there long lines to board Skyliner?
During the morning and evening rush lines can be as long as 15 to 20 minutes at the Caribbean Beach station. Transportation at Walt Disney World whether you’re waiting for a bus, monorail, boat or gondola, will usually be about 20 minutes when the parks are opening and closing.
The real advantage to Skyliner, however, is that during off-peak times, there’s no wait at all.
Can I use Skyliner for rope drop?
Rope drop is an unofficial term that means, “arriving at the parks slightly before they open.” This allows you to get a head start on crowds and I do highly recommend it.
Often Skyliner will start running 30-60 minutes prior to park opening. Ask at your hotel what time it will start running.
Don’t forget to allow time to board Skyliner during rush hour, wait times can be 15-20 minutes during this period. Yes, another reason to get an early start on your day at Walt Disney World!
Disney Skyliner station
Can I Ride Skyliner if I’m not staying at one of the hotels?
Yes! It’s perfectly ok to board Skyliner at one of the theme park stations to go for a ride. The best time to do this would be late afternoon to early evening. One of the more scenic routes is between Epcot and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.
I’m afraid of heights, can I take a bus instead of Skyliner?
Sure, buses still run between the Skyliner hotels and the theme parks, however, they are on reduced schedules and may arrive only once per hour.
Inside a Disney Skyliner gondola
Can I take a stroller in the gondola? Do strollers need to be folded on Skyliner
Most strollers will fit without the need to fold them up, even the double-wide strollers fit in the Skyliner gondolas.
Can I take a wheelchair or scooter on Skyliner?
Yes. Skyliner operators will slow the speed of the gondola allowing you to roll in. You also have the option of boarding a stationary gondola. Stationary gondolas are located on a separate spur in the station. When you’re ready to go, the gondola will rejoin the main line. The gondola will be discreetly marked so the operators at the other station will know to direct it off the main line onto the spur.
Are Skyliner cabins air conditioned?
No, but they have large vents at the top. While the gondolas are moving, there’s a steady breeze that passes through the cabin. Even on the hottest day in Florida, the breeze moving through the gondola is sufficient to keep you cool.

Royal Caribbean ships frequently found sailing from Orlando (Port Canaveral) Florida
Royal Caribbean has over 25 cruise ships and they are moved around the globe to reach different markets during different times of the year.
That being said, Independence of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas often sail from Orlando (Port Canaveral).

During the busy cruise seasons, whenever schools are on a break, Royal Caribbean will usually run an Oasis Class ship out of Port Canaveral as well.
Oasis Class ships are the largest in the world, currently, there are 5 of them, and all are owned by Royal Caribbean.

Things to do in Nassau, Bahamas Without Booking an Excursion
Did you know you can explore Nassau, Bahamas on your cruise without an excursion?
Did you know you can explore Nassau, Bahamas on your cruise without an excursion? While there are a number of things to do like chilling at the beaches, exploring Nassau’s historical sites, renting a jet-ski or visiting the Atlantis Resort, you can have a great day just walking around the port area on your own, without an excursion.
Both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean almost always include a day at Nassau on their 3 and 4 night itineraries from Florida.
Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas (center) and Freedom of the Seas (right) are twins - both part of the Freedom Class.
It’s perfectly ok to get off the ship for a couple of hours, walk around the port, then go back to the ship for lunch and enjoy the pool with lower crowds.
Fun fact! Nassau was Royal Caribbean’s very first port over 50 years ago.
As soon as you leave the pier (and make your way through a few offers for a taxi ride) you’ll be in Nassau’s touristy shopping district. But that’s ok, you’re a tourist!
There are a number of t-shirt and souvenir shops, jewelry stores, bars and restaurants, an outdoor flea market and even places to get your hair braided - all within a short walk from your cruise ship.
A busy day in Nassau, Bahamas. The Disney Dream is pictured center and Anthem of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ship is on the far left.
The Disney Fantasy at Nassau, Bahamas
Straw Market - Nassau
A 5 minute walk from the pier on Bay Street, you’ll find Nassau’s world-famous Straw Market.
The Straw Market - Nassau, Bahamas
Now, I don’t know how “world famous” it is but it’s home to local, handmade Bahamian crafts, souvenirs, and items such as hand-woven straw hats, bags, mats, dolls, conch shell jewelry, and wood carvings.
It’s also a great place to try your negotiating skills - it’s even expected. Most of the vendors inside will accept US currency and or credit cards.
The Straw Market is a 5 minute walk from the cruise port, right on Bay Street.
The Straw Market has t-shirts and apparel, but my favorite items are the wood carvings, sea shell crafts and other items made by the locals.
Before you commit to buying something, I recommend that you first walk the entire market so you can get a sense of what they offer here.
Shopping on Bay Street - Things to do in Nassau
Bay Street is a block over from the cruise port and lined with touristy shops. I like it because it’s not too far from the ship. Remember that it is a foreign country and a poor one at that. So, it’s best to stay in the well-traveled, touristy areas.
Bay Street on Nassau
Stores on one side of the street tend to be focused on inexpensive t-shirts and souvenirs while the opposite side tends to have more jewelry.
The stores have the same type of merchandise, for the most part, but there’s enough variety to make each one interesting.
Prices vary widely from place to place too so don’t from the first store you visit. Shop around a little.

Christ Church Anglican Cathedral - Things to do in Nassau
This Anglican church is over 100 years old and remarkably beautiful. It’s actually quite small even though it’s called a cathedral but Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry have visited here over the years.
This isn’t a tourist destination necessarily and that’s exactly why I like it. In the midst of the t-shirt district, you come across a local church, beautifully maintained.
You are free to go inside, sit down, and just reflect for a moment or two.
Christ Church Anglican Cathedral is a nice break from the touristy things in the area
The church is about a 10 minute walk from the cruise port and just a few blocks up from the Straw Market and Bay Street shops.
Pirates of Nassau Museum - Things to do in Nassau
I found Pirates of Nassau by accident just walking around randomly with my son and although I was hesitant to walk in - he begged me to go inside.
Pirates of Nassau - Nassau, Bahamas
I pictured some disappointing tourist trap inside but it’s an excellent museum - one might say a real treasure here in Nassau!
This museum is one of my most recommended activities in Nassau while exploring on your own.
Pirates of Nassau - Nassau, Bahamas
Pirates were a very real part of the Bahamas including the notorious pirates you probably heard about like Black Beard.
And while they were a rough bunch, they were absolutely adored by people all over the world (except the British Navy).
Pirates of Nassau - Nassau, Bahamas
At this museum you’ll experience pirate life in a realistic setting, one that rivals Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World.
Admission is $13.50 for adults, kids ages 4-17 pay $6.75. It takes about 30 minutes to see the entire museum and it’s self-guided.
You can walk to the museum in under 10 minutes along the shops on Bay Street. It’s also right across the street from the Christ Church Anglican Cathedral.
So, is it worth getting off the ship in Nassau? Yes! I think it’s worth getting off the ship even if you prefer to skip the excursions (aka port adventures). Exploring on your own is a great way to spend the morning. But also take advantage of lower crowds onboard the ship.
Your day in Nassau is also a great time to enjoy the water slides or other activities onboard with fewer people.
If you prefer to book an excursion at Nassau, I personally only recommend Paradise Island (Atlantis Resort). I also recommend booking this with your cruise line as they often include transportation. It’s always best to book port adventures directly with your cruise line because they vet the tour companies and they are also responsible for you.
I’m often asked, do I need a passport for a cruise to the Bahamas?
No. Although I recommend a passport just in case, you do not need to show any form of government ID in the Bahamas. A birth certificate is sufficient when you reenter the United States.
But, if you have an emergency and need to fly home from Nassau, you will need a passport to board a plane. Passports can be obtained in about 8-10 weeks, so if you have time, it’s worth getting.

10 Essential Tips for Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay
Make the most of your day at Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas - Perfect Day at Coco Cay
Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private island in the Bahamas and it’s the highlight of the cruise for most people. The only way to experience the island is to book a Bahamas or Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbean.
Perfect Day at Coco Cay is where you can relax on white sand beaches, swim up to the bar in the largest pool in the Bahamas and ride the tallest waterslide in North America.
And most Bahamas and Caribbean cruises stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Cruises depart from New Jersey, multiple ports in Florida including Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami, and Louisiana and Texas.
Here are 10 Essential Tips that will help you make the most of your visit to Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
10. Check-out towels before you disembark
Beach towels are available onboard your ship and can be brought onto the island, which you can refresh throughout the day as desired, at one of three towel stations.
Since beach towels are provided onboard based on a check-out/check-in system, you should bring the same number of towels back to the ship with you.
Guests who have rented cabanas will have towels at the cabana and may leave the towels there upon departure.
9. Get to the Lagoon Pool early
The Lagoon pool on Coco Cay is the largest freshwater pool in the Bahamas. There’s a chill side and a party side plus a swim-up bar.
There’s even underwater music playing.
The pool is a popular spot so I recommend you go as soon as you’re allowed to disembark the ship so you can get a lounge chair.
You can reserve your chair with towels but be mindful of others and only reserve chairs while you're in the pool.
8. Know the 3 main beaches on Coco Cay,
Chill Island is the largest on the island and has all your beach day favorites including a snorkeling area, jet ski rentals, a small shopping village, and Chill Grill.
South Beach is a more quiet, more relaxed beach. Here you can rent bungalows and day beds. It has a more secluded feel. But it also has volleyball, basketball courts, and tailgate games.
Coco Beach Club - is an upgraded beach experience with an infinity pool, beach, private restaurant, personal attendants, and cabana rentals.
7. Free island shuttles
Perfect Day at Coco Cay is a large island and I recommend that you explore different areas throughout the day.
Most activities and beaches are a 10-15 minute walk from the ship but free shuttles will take you out to the beaches.
6. Visit Captain Jacks for shade, live music
If you need to take a break from the sun, head over to Captain Jack’s - an open-air pavilion with live music and drinks.
Here you’ll find the Coco Loco, a frozen, rum-based beverage that has become the island’s signature drink.
5. Beverage packages are accepted on the island
If you’re undecided about purchasing a beverage package for your cruise, consider that they are accepted virtually everywhere on the island.
This even includes the soft drink package.
If you didn’t purchase a beverage, ala carte menus are available and you can pay for drinks using your SeaPass card.
4. Free water and juice
Didn’t buy a drink package? That’s ok!
Water and juice are free throughout the day, just like onboard the ship.
I recommend you pack a reusable bottle so you can fill up at one of the beverage stations and take it back to your spot without having to make multiple trips.
3. Thrill Water Park is great for teens
Thrill Water Park is home to the tallest water slide in North America, a wave pool, and even zip lines.
Admission to this area is one of the few things that is not included with your cruise but you if purchase admission in advance and you’ll save money.
Your teens must be at least age 14 to go in without an adult. You’ll notice this is the teen hangout on the island so you can drop them off and set a time to meet up later in the day.
And while the teens are at Thrill Water Park, you can enjoy the beaches, take a break at Captain Jacks or relax at the Lagoon Pool.
2. Fun for little ones
Perfect Day at Cococay was designed so that everyone has something to do. Your little ones will love Splashaway Bay and Captain Jills Galleon - fun watery playgrounds. There is no additional charge for either. Splashaway Bay even has places for adults to sit or you can get in on the fun as well.
1. Lunch on the island is included
I promise you won’t go hungry on Coco Cay. Chill Grill is the largest venue, an open-air pavilion serving BBQ favorites like burgers, sandwiches, even a ribeye steak sandwich, and all the sides you can handle.
You’ll also find 3 snack shacks on Perfect Day at Coco Cay - one at Thrill Water Park, one at the Oasis Lagoon, and one on South Beach. By the way ask for the secret, off-menu chicken parm sandwich Snack Shack.
Here are 2 bonus tips for visiting the island:
If you want to take a thrilling ride on Up, Up, and Away, the helium balloon on CocoCay, go first thing in the morning. The balloon can go up to 450 feet but this maximum height is dependent on the weather. Winds are usually calmer in the morning so you have a better chance of going all the way up.
Remember to bring sunscreen as you’ll be closer to the sun up there. Oh, and kids age 3 and under are free.
Finally, my favorite tip is if you go for a walk on the island, bring your phone. You may spot a wild chicken or two on the island. They run around randomly throughout the day which is pretty comical but a great photo opp. Just keep in mind you’re not allowed to feed or chase them.

Take a tour of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort at Walt Disney World. Here you’ll be immersed in the spirit of the South Pacific with tropical palm trees, lush vegetation and torch-lit pathways. In this tour, we go inside guest rooms, restaurant at the Polynesian and the Great Ceremonial House. Get insider planning advice and more ▸
At Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort you’ll be immersed in the spirit of the South Pacific with tropical palm trees, lush vegetation and torch-lit pathways.
While technically Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is the flagship hotel at Walt Disney World, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort has been the most popular hotel since it opened in 1971. Even a few unofficial fan clubs have been created.
Dining, shopping, hotel check in and the monorail are all located in the The Great Ceremonial House, the main building within the resort.
Its nearly 500 guest rooms are located inside several, 3-story outer buildings called longhouses. The furthest is an 8 minute walk from The Great Ceremonial House.
Exterior pathways lead to the different buildings. Hotel rooms are accessed through interior hallways.
This 40-acre resort sits directly across from Magic Kingdom Park on the man-made Seven Seas Lagoon, just minutes away by monorail or by boat.
The Magic Kingdom monorail stops at the lobby of the Polynesian and the Epcot monorail line is within walking distance.
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Rooms
Ground floor rooms have patios, third floor rooms have covered balconies.
Most of the resort’s second floor rooms do not have full balconies. Instead they have a sliding door that opens to outside but it is not possible to actually stand outside.
My clients will often ask me to request a first floor or third floor room so they have the option of going outside.
For assistance with making room requests, plus other insider advice on planning your Walt Disney World vacation, contact me here to get started!
Most guest rooms have the same configuration: 2 queen beds and a twin-size daybed.
Suites and Club Level rooms are available as well.
Like most Disney World hotels, the nightly rate depends largely by the view from your room and/or the room location. Disney charges more for premium views and/or more convenient room locations.
At Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort there are 6 main room categories:
Standard View - Views of gardens, walkways, or monorail.
Lagoon View - Views of the the Seven Seas Lagoon. Some rooms may have an obstructed view of Magic Kingdom.
Pool or Marina View - Rooms that overlook one of the two pools or a room overlooking the marina on the Seven Seas Lagoon. There isn’t much of a marina these days compared to years ago, but Disney still uses it to dock a few boats.
Theme Park View - Views of the distant Magic Kingdom Park. Most rooms have views of the nightly fireworks and the Seven Seas Lagoon.
Club Level - There are multiple views to choose from within the Club Level category such as Theme Park View and Garden View. These are standard rooms but include access to a lounge where breakfast and snacks are served daily.
Deluxe Studio - Views of the lagoon, landscaping or parking areas. These spacious rooms have a kitchenette with a microwave, toaster, mini-fridge, paper plates, bowls, and plastic utensils. They have 1 Queen Bed, 1 Queen-Size murphy bed that doubles as a sofa, and 1 Single pull-down bed. Sleeps up to 5 adults
How Much Does Disney’s Polynesian Resort Cost?
Rates vary by day of the week, time of year and room view. Friday and Saturday night stays cost a little more.
Rates are lower from late August through October and higher from February through April.
Holiday rates are in effect between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and the week immediately following Easter.
Approximate room rates at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
Standard View starting at $650/night
Pool or Marina View starting at $765/night
Lagoon View starts at $890/night
Theme Park View starts at $960/night
Garden View Club Level starts at $928/night
Theme Park View Club Level starts at $1025/night
Deluxe Studio starts at $655/night
Note that Garden View Club Level is less than a Theme Park View room. I advise my clients to book the Club Level room over the Theme Park View whenever possible. The value of Club Level outweighs the view of Magic Kingdom.
What is Club Level at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort?
Club Level rooms are not suites, they are standard rooms with 2 queen beds and 1 daybed, but they come with access to the King Kamehameha Club. Here you’ll have secured key access to the club-level lounge, where a continental breakfast and refreshments are served daily.

Is there a place to do laundry at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort?
Yes, there is a laundry room on site. I recommend bringing your own detergent pods. The brand Disney sells isn’t very effective at removing stains.

Yes, John Lennon was staying at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in December 1974. His lawyers brought him the official documents to sign that would officially dissolve The Beatles. How to Use Uber / Lyft at Disney World and Universal Orlando
Frequently asked questions about using rideshares like Uber and Lyft to travel around Orlando, Florida.
Need to get to a Disney World restaurant or travel between Disney Resort hotels? Going to Orlando International Airport? How about a ride between Disney World and Universal Orlando? Uber and Lyft are widely available in Orlando and offer fast, reliable transportation.
Here are some of the most popular questions I get about using a Uber and Lyft in Orlando.
How much does it cost to go from Disney World to Universal Resort?
Fares will vary but usually around $20 - $30 each way.
Which is cheaper in Orlando? Lyft or Uber?
Lyft tends to have better rates than Uber. For example, Universal to Orlando International Airport is about $32 with Uber. Lyft is about $24.
Check both Uber and Lyft to compare rates before each ride.
Did you know that Disney World is 50 square miles? That’s twice the size of New York City!
How much does it cost to travel within Walt Disney World?
Average fares are about $8 - $16.
How long will I have to wait for Uber / Lyft to arrive?
Less than 10 minutes, in most cases cars come immediately.
Orlando International Airport (MCO)
Can you use Uber or Lyft from Orlando International Airport?
Yes, Uber and Lyft are available at Orlando Airport (MCO). Look for the “Ride App” signs on Level 2 to you guide to the pick up area.
Uber and Lyft will take you directly to your hotel where as some shuttle services stop at multiple hotels along the way.
Uber and Lyft are readily available at Disney World and Universal hotels when it’s time to go back to the airport (booo!)
Where does Uber and Lyft pick up at Universal Orlando?
Use the dedicated Uber Zone located in the Jurassic Park Garage. Uber is the official rideshare provider of Universal (Disney went with Lyft) so you’ll only see signs for Uber. But both companies pick up and drop off from this location.
If you’re visiting Volcano Bay water park, you can take a complimentary shuttle from the Uber Zone.
Signs for Uber and Lyft can be found throughout the exit of Universal Orlando directing you where to go.

Universal Orlando Resort
Can Uber and Lyft bypass the parking booths at the Orlando theme parks?
At Disney, yes, drivers will identify themselves to the parking attendant who will direct them to the drop-off area.
At Universal, drivers must use the Uber Zone drop-off center located in the Jurassic Park Garage.
Can Uber / Lyft use Disney’s Contemporary Resort for Magic Kingdom drop-off and pick-up?
Sometimes yes, but security guard may redirect your driver to the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC). This is likely to happen during busy times such as holidays and RunDisney weekends.
The official policy is that drivers must use the TTC as this is the official ride-share zone for Magic Kingdom Park.
If you have a dining reservation at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, your driver will be permitted to enter the lot.
How will the driver find me?
Drivers will see your GPS location but it’s helpful to send a message with your location and a description. Communication between you and your driver is important and they appreciate short descriptions!
For example, “I’m near the bell desk at Disney’s Polynesian VIllage Resort, wearing a gray Mickey Mouse shirt and blue shorts.”
How far in advance should I request my ride?
Drivers arrive pretty quick at Walt Disney World and Universal, so request your ride when you are standing in the pick up zone.
If you are requesting a ride from Magic Kingdom Park, first take the monorail or ferry to the Ticket at Transportation Center (TTC), then request your ride. You can only be picked up at the TTC, not at the Magic Kingdom.
Another option is to walk to Disney’s Contemporary Resort and request your ride once you are there.
At the TTC, drivers are probably already queued in the waiting zone and will pull up quickly.
Are car seats available through Uber and Lyft?
Yes, with Uber you can use Uber Car Seat for an additional fee, about $10. This may increase your wait time. Lyft is still working to introduce car seats as an option in Orlando.
