10 Epic Universe Attractions that Will Change Orlando

Epic Universe will be the main reason people visit Orlando in 2025.

While Disney World was busy injecting itself into politics in 2020, Universal Orlando was quietly working on a top-secret project -  a massive new theme park called Epic Universe. I’m hearing that this will be Orlando’s most technologically advanced theme park and I think this has probably caught Disney off guard. This is going to be the new reason people come to vacation in Orlando!

Here's my list of 10 game-changing attractions that will raise the bar in the theme park capital of the world.

You can also watch the video here:

Everywhere I go in Orlando these days, Im met with major road construction projects and heavy traffic. This is all in preparation for Epic Universe, opening in the summer of 2025. I thought it was time to share with you some highlights of this new park. And get ready because it’s huge! It has 5 themed lands, like Super Nintendo World and Wizarding World of Harry Potter Ministry of Magic, over 50 rides and attractions, several themed restaurants, and 3 new hotels.

#10 Super Nintendo World Interactive Key Challenges

I had an opportunity to visit Super Nintendo World in Hollywood, California last year and as a kid of the 90’s, it was totally rad!  As soon as I entered through the tunnel, I had to press pause for a moment to take it all in. There are attractions, interactive challenges, character meets, and even a restaurant. But the Key Challenges in particular were especially fun. I am thrilled that we’re getting this in Orlando which i suspect will be nearly identical, only larger! The California version is actually kind of small.

Super Nintendo World Key Challenge Game - Universal Orlando

Here’s the story: Bowser Jr. has stolen the Golden Mushroom! Using your Power-Up Band, you can retrieve the Golden Mushroom for Princess Peach by playing interactive games throughout the land and collecting digital keys. I think this means that Universal mobile app be how you keep track of yoru keys.

Once you obtain three keys, you’ll unlock a special game called Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. This is yet another technologically advanced attraction where you interact with Nintendo-themed shadows being projected on the wall. I did this in California and it was one of the highlights of our day.

You will need to purchase a PowerUp Band, I got mine at Universal Hollywood for about $45. But without it, Super Nintendo World won’t make very much sense. Even though it’s an additional cost, I think you get what you pay for here.

Universal Power Up Bands

Now when I was invited to check this out in California I did notice that the lines for Key Challenges got pretty long - about 45 minutes per game. And you only play the game for about a minute. So I’m hoping Universal thinks of a better way to manage this for Epic Universe.

#9 Fyre Drill

In How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, one of the 5 themed lands at Epic Universe, you’ll find four attractions, a live show, and several character meet-and-greets. But I think the ride Fyre Drill really stands out as a unique attraction. You’ll head out to sea on a new boat ride where you’ll aim water cannons at targets and other objects (maybe even each other). Sounds to me like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom or Men in Black Alient Attack but with water!

Fyre Drill Ride at Universal Orlando

Fyre Drill at Universal Epic Universe

From your boat you’ll blast water cannons at flame-like targets to practice putting out fires – a crucial skill to master when living with dragons, of course.

At Dragon Racer’s Rally, Berk’s new Vikings can practice aerobatic maneuvers and high-speed barrel rolls on a massive swing ride. Universal says this swing will go upside down and that riders will be able to make it as wild or mild as they wish. This ride at its core is an off-the-shelf ride likely built by S&S but with some very unique modifications.

Universal says the Untrainable Dragon will be a Broadway-style production with spectacular music and a heartwarming story. I’m surprised at how big the theater looks. This is going to be a major attraction at Epic Universe.

#8 Das Steakhaus - Dark Universe

Das Steakhouse Epic Universe

Dacula invites you to dine in his new restaurant: Das Steakhouse

I wasn’t going to include a restaurant on my list but this one looks exceptionally interesting. Inside the Dark Universe world, you’ll be able to dine in Dracula’s very own restaurant. I wonder if this is a play on words, I mean steaks and vampires don’t mix. Or are we supposed to picture a bloody steak perhaps - undercooked? I don’t know but it’s a great concept and I love it as a steakhouse. This fast-casual restaurant will have a castle theme and since this is Dracula’s restaurant, it will feature artwork that shows vampires as heroes for a change.

Burning Blade Tavern Epic Universe

The Burning Blade Tavern will also be a major highlight in Dark Universe.  The windmill at the top of this quick-service restaurant erupts into flames several times an hour. I’m told that two types of fuel are used, allowing for easy visibility during both day and night. But can you imagine how cool this will look especially at night? The exterior of The Burning Blade Tavern comes from the 1931 Universal film, Frankenstein where an angry mob surrounded the old mill, setting it on fire, and trapping Frankenstein inside.

#7 Mine Cart Madness - Super Nintendo World

Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness Ride at Universal Orlando

Let’s go back to Super Nintendo World because there’s a coaster here that does the unthinkable. It leaps across a collapsed section of track - using special effects obviously. Mine Cart Madness is a Donkey Kong-themed coaster where you’ll hop into a mine cart and go on a thrilling ride through the jungle. I have seen some of this in testing and I can tell you that the carts are designed to move just like they do in the Nintendo video game. Are you thinking that we will be jumping over barrels and old rickety sections of track too?

#6 Monsters Unchained - Dark Universe

Dark universe at Epic Universe

I think Dark Universe will be one of the most immersive worlds at Epic Universe. And the flagship attraction will be Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. Universal says this will be the most terrifying attraction they have ever created - and after seeing what they can do during Halloween Horror Nights, I imagine this will really be something.

You’ll start out in Frankenstein Manor. There you’re invited by Dr Victoria Frankenstein to witness her experiment on how she can control monsters. But something goes wrong and you’ll be set off on a dark ride attraction encountering classic monsters like Dracula, The Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and others.

The ride system for this looks to be similar to the one used at Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

Dark Universe will also be home to Curse of the Werewolf, a thrilling dark ride attraction that will reach speeds up to 37 miles per hour, as you go racing through a dark forest encountering the glowing eyes and sharp teeth of the werewolf himself.

#5 Stardust Racers - Celestial Park

With speeds reaching 62 mph and soaring to heights of 133 feet on a 4,800-foot track, Stardust Racers will be a dueling coaster that simulates comets sailing through the skies. It’s also going to be the longest coaster ever created by Universal. But what impresses me the most is that both coasters will perform an inverted crisscross at the same time.

Epic Universe Stardust Racers at Epic Universe - Universal Orlando

Universal will not have any illuminated sections of track at night - and will only illuminate the coaster vehicles. This effect will make it look like comets are shooting across the sky above you.

#4 Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry - Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter and The Battle at the Ministry will be a dark ride attraction where you’ll travel by Métro-Floo – a unique mode of wizarding transit inspired by the iconic Floo Network seen in the films. On this ride, you’re on a journey from wizarding Paris to the British Ministry of Magic for the long-awaited trial of the infamous Dolores Umbridge.

Epic Universe - Harry Potter Ride

Upon arrival, you will enter the Ministry’s jaw-dropping grand atrium and venture through other departments before boarding magical, omnidirectional lifts to watch the trial take place…until Umbridge attempts to escape. Guests then join Harry Potter friends in a thrilling chase that will propel you up, down, forward, backward, and sideways throughout the Ministry as they try to capture Umbridge – all while dodging attacks from Death Eaters, rampaging creatures, and more along the way.

#3 Mario Cart Bowsers Challenge - Super Nintendo World

Mario Cart Bowser’s Challenge was the single best ride experience I had when I visited Universal Hollywood. And I think this is going to be a favorite here in Florida too. Like Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness, this ride is also a huge hit in Universal Japan. Mario Cart Bower’s Challenge is rich in attention to detail. The queue is exactly like Bowser's Castle. As you walk along, the the queue gradually reveals that the ride's plot involves "Team Bowser" challenging "Team Mario."

epic universe at Universal Orlando - Mario Kart Bowser's Challenge Ride

I expect Orlando’s version to very similar as Japan and Hollywood. In the first Preshow room, you’ll are given augmented reality visors and then it’s off to the second room. When you get to the ride, your visor will connect to your ride vehicle where you set out on a track that is a very realistic version of the video game, Mario Cart.

If riders collectively earn 100 points, the ride ends with "Team Mario" winning the race. However, if riders don't accumulate enough points, they'll see an alternate ending where "Team Bowser" wins.

Without a doubt, this is the most technologically advanced ride I have ever been on.

#2 Terra Luna / Stella Nova Hotels

Epic Universe will include 2 brand-new value hotels: Stella Nova and Terra Luna. Both are located just outside Epic Universe, a few blocks away from Icon Park and The Weel in Orlando. You can’t miss either of them with their reflective iridescent exterior and futurist windows.

Terra Luna Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort

Stella Luna Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort

Stella Nova and Terra Luna will each have 750 rooms and will include Exclusive Theme Park Benefits and complimentary transportation. Terra Luna Opens on February 25, 2025, and Stella Nova opens on January 21, 2025.

Both hotels will be opened several months ahead of Epic Universe. I suspect Universal is opening them early to carry out a test and adjust period and to compete with the current Orlando Convention Center area hotels.

Stella Nova will be themed to reflect the infinite vastness of the universe while Terra Luna will place guests in an awe-inspiring solar system – accented with fresh surroundings and terrestrial greens and golds. Stella Nova Resort and Terra Luna will be priced at around $147 per night. And I already have my reservation so stay tuned for a review.

#1 Helios Grand Hotel

Universal Helios Grand Hotel is inspired by the Astronomical and Mythological Themes of Celestial Park inside Epic Universe. But the feature that I like most about this resort, and I think for many of you too, is that it will have its own dedicated theme park entrance. So you’ll be able to walk out of the hotel and go right into Epic Universe!

Helios Grand Hotel at Epic Universe - Universal Orlando

This will give Universal Orlando 11 hotels, and 11,000 guest rooms total. About one-third of what Disney World has.

Now we don’t yet have an opening date for the Helios Grand or a price point. But something that it’s interesting is that Universal isn’t calling this a Premier hotel like Hard Rock, Portofino or Royal Pacific - this one is labeled as a Signature Hotel. So this has me wondering if it will be it’s own hotel class or if Premier Hotels will now be known as Signature Hotels. I suspect there will be some additional theme park perks as well for guests staying here.

Helios Grand Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort

Which of these ten attractions are you looking forward to the most when Epic Universe Opens? Let’s get the conversation started below in the comments. For me, it has to be Dark Universe i mean that flaming windmill looks amazing and Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness looks like so much fun.  Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to see a roller coaster somehow jump the track.

Last Year I made a video based on my visit to Super Nintendo World in Universal Hollywood. It will give you some idea of what we can expect here in Orlando. You can watch that below:

Abandoned Walt Disney World (Part 2)

I'm taking you on a tour of 10 abandoned areas at Walt Disney World Resort. You won't believe how they are hiding in plain sight!

Disney’s experiences division, which includes Walt Disney World, is the best-performing part of the Walt Disney Company. But even with the theme parks carrying the company, I discovered 10 more venues at Walt Disney World that are just sitting abandoned today.

This is Abandoned Walt Disney World - Part 2

Discovery Island at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida has been abandoned since 1999.

Today I’m taking you on another nostalgic journey through Walt Disney World Resort to explore some abandoned attractions hiding in plain sight. In my first video, I asked you what you’d like me to cover next in Part 2. Many of you requested the same one - so it’s only fitting that I gave it the top spot - stay tuned to #1 to see what it is!

Watch the full video: Abandoned Disney Part 2

#10 The Outpost Shop

Just Outside Animal Kingdom’s main entrance, you’ll find this abandoned gift shop. The Outpost Shop was your first and last chance to buy Animal Kingdom-related merch like safari hats, African wood carvings, Disney toys, and Animal Kingdom logo items. It was outside the gates so you didn’t need a ticket to buy a souvenir.

I have not seen it opened in the past 5 years but the Disney World website shows it’s temporarily closed. I occasionally see a Cast Member come out, so it might be used for something internally. If you know what it’s being used for, leave a comment. I mostly see confused guests walk around it thinking it might be a restroom.

#9 Discovery River

All that’s left of the Discovery River Boats at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park are the covered buildings that once led to a very short-lived attraction. Well, technically it wasn’t an attraction, and that in itself was the problem. When Animal Kingdom opened in April 1998, the Discovery River Boats were operating as water taxis to shuttle guests around the park.

discoevery island boat ride at disney animal kingdom

However, guests thought this was an actual ride, and long lines were formed by eager guests wanting to go for a boat ride. I remember being there and thinking it would be similar to the Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom.

Disney did everything it could to let people know this wasn’t an attraction - even changing the name to “Discovery River Boat Water Taxi” a few months later. In 1999 Disney decided to close the water taxis but the docks are still there today.

The Upcountry Landing dock, located in the Asia section of the park, is now used for seating and special events. The dock in the former Safari Village, now known as Discovery Island, is often used for character meet and greets. I would love to see these boats come back one way or another.

#8 Discovery Island

If you’ve stayed at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge or Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, you are likely familiar with Discovery Island, situated in the middle of Bay Lake. Water taxis pass by it all day long and if you look carefully, you can still see some remnants of what this island used to be.

discovery-island-disney-world

It opened as Treasure Island in 1974 which was a little before my time but it sounds awesome to me. Later it was renamed Discovery Island and in 1995, it became a small zoo where Disney charged for admission. It closed in 1999 probably because Disney’s Aimal Kingdom Park had opened in ‘98.

disovery-island-disney-world

Today the islands sit abandoned with no plans for any future development. I’m told that most of the buildings and pathways are still there but have become victims of natural decay. What would you like to see Disney do with this island? Discovery Island has a rich interesting history, from the original owner who used to grow exotic plants to an incident that led to Disney being charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty. People have attempted to sneak onto the island over the years but each of them have been caught and banned from Disney. So please, do not attempt to tour this island.

#7 Fort Wilderness Marina

At one time guests could rent a variety of different boats from Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, and any other resort located on Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon. While it’s still possible to rent a boat at Disney World, you can no longer do so from Fort Wilderness. At one time you could rent pontoon boats, Boston Whalers, and my personal favorites, the Sea Raycers - also known as Water-Mouse.

Today if you would like to rent a boat, you’ll need to visit Disney’s Contemporary Resort or Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort where pontoon boats are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. The Fort Wilderness Marina is nearly abandoned today - opened only to those with scheduled fishing charters. The boat slips sit empty except for a few service boats and of course the water taxis to Magic Kingdom.

#6 Bonfamille’s Cafe at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort French Quarter

When Port Orleans Resort launched in 1990, Bonfamille’s Cafe served as its table service restaurant. After the 2001 merger with Dixie Landings, forming Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter, Bonfamille’s closed and never reopened. Named after Madame Bonfamille from Disney’s 1973 film “The Aristocats”, it had children’s menus with a coloring book detailing the restaurant's and resort's backstory.  On the menu, you’d find things like French onion soup and gumbo dishes.

Bonfamille’s Cafe at Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter

Abandoned Bonfamille’s Cafe at Disney's Port Orleans Resort French Quarter

Today the restaurant sits shuttered, the signage removed. Most guests today would have no idea an entire restaurant sits on the other side of these doors. I’m told by Cast Members that this space is used for special events, and it’s also one of Disney’s test kitchens where they create mockups of restaurants, train cast members, and come up with test menus.

#5 Amani Village Traders at Epcot

The Amani Village Traders shop in Epcot was set up at one time to look like an African street market with souvenirs for sale inside and outside the building. There were several sections here mostly representing regions of Africa, where Disney hoped you would buy African toys and clothing and even straight-up Disney merch like hats and t-shirts

Amani Village Traders shop in Epcot

Amani Village Traders shop in Epcot

The Outpost was shuttered to make room for an exhibit during the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival in 2018. Then in 2023, Disney began removing much of the African artwork around the pavilion’s exterior, claiming it was culturally insensitive.

African masks and wood carvings hanging on the walls were replaced with posters, and a muralist was brought in to paint the roll-up doors - giving little hope that those doors will be opening anytime soon. Today Amani village is simply being used as storage.

#4 Big River Brewing

Big River Grille and Brewing Works was once a bustling spot on Disney’s Boardwalk. For years it provided guests with a casual dining option - catering to conventioneers who were staying at the Swan and Dolphin and Beach Club. Personally, I thought it was one of the worst restaurants in Disney World so I don’t miss it.

big-river-brewing-disney-boardwalk

Big River Brewing at Disney Boardwalk

The restaurant was owned by SPB Hospitality, which owns a nationwide chain of steakhouses like Logan’s Steakhouse and several microbreweries. The company filed for bankruptcy reorganization in June of 2020 and Big River Brewing didn’t make the cut. In January 2024, the restaurant closed permanently to guests.

Today, this abandoned space sticks out like a sore thumb on the Boardwalk along with another seemingly abandoned idea - the Cake Bake Shop.

This massive bakery was supposed to take over the space where ESPN Zone was once located. But it has been in a constant state of “coming soon” for many years now.

#3 Aunt Polly’s DockSide Inn

Many of you mentioned Aunt Polly’s Dockside in the comments of my first abandoned video so I was sure it include it in the sequel. Aunt Polly’s was, at one time, the quick service restaurant on Tom Sawyer Island. It’s a little out of the way - being accessible only by raft. Years ago it was known for fried chicken and biscuits. But today, it’s listed as permanently closed on Google Maps and it has been removed from the Disney World website.

aunt polly restaurant abandoned walt disney world

Aunt Polly's Dockside at Magic Kingdom

It has been known to operate seasonally during the busiest weeks at Walt Disney World but I have not personally seen it opened in several years.

#2 Tangaroa Terrace

If you have ever walked through Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort or passed by it on the monorail, you have certainly seen Tangeroa Terrace. It’s a huge building that sits right in the heart of the resort and It has been shuttered longer than it has been opened. Over the years it had numerous functions ranging from a buffet restaurant, a convention room, and even a child care center called the Neverland Club, and later  Lilo’s Playhouse which closed in 2018. That would be the last time anything happened here. But here’s a fun fact, you can still go inside this building - sort of. It also serves as the hotel’s laundry room. If anyone know what this building is being used for today, please leave a comment.

#1 Stage 1 Company Store

The number 1 comment I received after making my first Abandoned Disney video was that I need to include the Stage 1 Company Store - also known as the Muppet Store. It was one of the go-to stores for all things Muppets, being located right at the exit of Muppet Vision 3D. The store once sold plush characters,

Muppet-themed toys, figures, and t-shirts. Both inside and outside fans could find a ton Muppet signs and gags, many of the exterior ones are still visible today. Inside, however, all the retail racks and displays have been removed, giving little hope that this store will make a comeback.

Actually, we will be lucky if Muppet Vision 3D is still around in a few years as Disney has announced plans for a Monsters Inc themed roller coaster - and it could very well be built in this spot.

If you missed Part One of my abandoned series you can watch it here:
